The pawpaw (Asimina triloba), North America’s largest native tree fruit, was designated the state native fruit of Ohio in 2009.  Past generations, including Native Americans and early explorers, cultivated and subsisted on this highly nutritious fruit.  The protein-rich pawpaw’s sweet flavor and custard texture are often compared to that of a banana or mango; it also ranks high in niacin, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, potassium, vitamin C and phosphorus, and contains all of the essential amino acids.  Pawpaw trees, which grow indigenously in 26 states in the eastern United States, have also become popular in edible landscapes and backyard gardens.

Fresh pawpaws are available for a short time in the fall, generally from September to early October, depending on weather conditions.  Despite its superior nutritional benefits, the pawpaw remains a somewhat elusive fruit due to its thin skin and delicate nature.  It bruises easily and has a short shelf life, making it a challenge to store long-term.

Integration Acres pawpaws are mostly wild-harvested, with the occasional named cultivar in the mix.  Each 2-lb order contains 4-10 fruits in varying stages of ripeness.

Use caution when baking with pawpaws (fresh or frozen).  Pawpaws also should never be dehydrated into fruit leather.  There are reports of individuals experiencing gastrointestinal distress when baking and dehydrating.
